Smeg's guide to induction cooktops

Discover everything you need to know about Induction cooktops and why they could be the right choice for you.

WHY CHOOSE AN INDUCTION COOKTOP?

HOW DO INDUCTION COOKTOPS WORK?

Induction cooking is based on magnetic fields: each ‘element’ generates a magnetic field that induces heat onto a ferrous material in the base of the pan. The pot becomes the element that cooks the food, and, as a consequence, energy efficiency is maximised and heat loss is minimised as only the base of the pan is heated.

A UNIVERSAL DESIGN

The look of an induction cooktop is clean, modern and elegant. Its minimalistic design makes it a popular choice as it compliments most kitchen styles.

Induction hobs come in a variety of sizes, all the way up to a large 90cm wide version. Colours options include black, neptune grey and glass.

QUICK AND POWERFUL

Induction is faster than gas cooking, taking just over two minutes to boil a litre of water. They can also cool down quickly when needed, making them the most flexible cooking option for chefs.

You can find up to 17 power levels on some models as well as power boosters, ideal for intense cooking or when time is of the essence.
Some models also feature low power cooking, such as melting and keep warm functions. This means, by choosing Induction you can even melt chocolate directly in the pan without a bain-marie.

SAFETY COMES FIRST

Due to the way they work, Induction cooktops are a safer option when compared to gas or ceramic. There is no flame and heat is only generated when the pan comes into direct contact of the specific cooking zone, ensuring safety in the presence of children.

A child safety lock is also present for added reassurance, so children are unable to adjust the controls if selected.

If the induction cooktop surface is still hot, a [H] is indicated on the control panel. Once the temperature falls to a safe level, the indicator will go out and the cooktop can be easily cleaned.

EASY TO CLEAN

With a completely flat surface, there are no areas for dirt to get trapped in, so they are very easy to keep clean. Also if a pan overboils, the liquid does not burn onto the hob and can be easily wiped away.

ENERGY SAVING

Power consumption is optimised as only the base of the pan is heated so no heat or energy is wasted. This means that less power is used vs other methods, but your food will cook faster.

TOUCH CONTROLS

Extremely user friendly, touch controls allow you to select the zone and temperature with ease. A variety of controls are available from multi sliders to digi touch, all responsive and intuitive.

FLEXIBLE COOKING
Some cooktops in the range offer flexible cooking areas such as multizone and AREA cooktops. These features allow the surface area of the cooktop to become much more flexible and enable multiple or larger pans to be used by bridging zones to create larger cooking areas.
PRECISE
Due to the quick-reacting nature of Induction, you can go from searing a piece of meat to melting butter in no time. Induction allows for precise temperature control for intricate cooking or simmering.
